Stressful situations in police work and points out importance taking care of yourself regardless of the length of the service

Abstract

The paper is based on the practice of a police psychologist and points to the connection between the exercise of the police profession and the psyche of a policeman. The article introduces how they can be perceived some stressful situations in police work and points out importance taking care of yourself regardless of the length of the service.

It is intended for all police officers from those beginning to those who have been serving for over thirty years. Does not aspire to delimit all possible situations with which the police officers may encounter during the service, however, it defines the basic ones and puts into context considerations on the overlap of police work into personal life and mentions some aspects that play a role coping with increased stress and emotional stress.

Common denominator how to better handle the demands of police services is the care itself, in other words the mental Hygiene, whose application may increase how the job satisfaction of the police officers, so at the same time to prolong the service of the police officer to prevent the departure of experienced police officers. The article will present the results of the investigation, which was carried out at the Regional Police Headquarters of the Pardubice Region and concerned the perception of the difficulty of different police situations in terms of stress whom the police officers can be exposed to.

The outcome is the introduction of police situations from those policemen perceived as the most demanding to the least demanding. The aim of the paper is to reflect on the findings overlapping into practical use not only for the police themselves but also for police management to create the best possible conditions for service performance and for the psychological work of the security corps psychologists, who can work with police officers throughout their service.
