Changing Stories, Changing Memories : St. Ólafr on pre- and post-Reformation Gotland

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The figure of St Óláfr was extremely popular and vastly venerated on Medieval Gotland. Even in the post-Reformation era he remained an important figure both in Gotlandic historiographic accounts and in popular belief.

From his popularity sprouted many local traditions that are extremely interesting as they can't be traced to the "canonical" Norwegian and Icelandic sources from the 12th and 13th century. But apart from the presenting of these ingenious Gotlandic traditions, I hope I will also show a connection between several Gotlandic traditions and some Late Medieval Scandinavian legendary accounts bound to the figure of Óláfr.
