Abstract

The aim of the study was to identify map user strategies during analysis of four thematic maps of differing cartographic methods (line symbols, area-shading, choropleth mapping, diagram mapping). The eye-tracking technology together with follow-up questionnaire was chosen to identify different approaches to solving these cognitively demanding skills.

The study was realised in cooperation with the Uniwersytet Warszawski in Poland. Thanks to this cooperation, it was possible to identify Czech and Polish user strategies.

And moreover, to characterize their similarities and differences. Besides that, the influence of cartographic expertize on chosen strategy and on their modification (adaptation) during the testing was analysed.
