Common Intention, Different Articulations : Discourses of Contemporary Islamic Environmental Ethics

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to subject this rather simplistic image of Islamic environmental ethics to more thorough scrutiny. Though not much discussed, there are in fact various discourses of the Islamic ethics of environment differing in many aspects - not unlikely to the environmentalism in general.

Based on the content analysis of few chosen texts representing the given discourses I will try to point out the most significant of these differences, relating e.g. the attitude to and method of interpretation of the sacred tradition, the approach towards the West, modernity, and the modern science, and the actual judgements on some controversial questions.
