The cruel years? Becoming a foreigner and a woman in Switzerland in the works of Irena Brežná, Katja Fusek and Ilma Rakusa
Abstract
The analysis presented in this article follows the literary Eastern Turn and transdisciplinary adolescence research. The novels The Ungrateful Stranger (2012) by Irena Brežná, November Threads (2002) by Katja Fusek and More of the Sea (2009) by Ilma Rakusa tell the story of young female protagonists from Czechoslovakia who are dealing with migration to Switzerland.
Drawing on the theories of foreign experience and entanglement (Bernhard Waldenfels), the translation (Joachim Renn, Andreas Langenohl / Manred Weinberg / Ralph J. Poole), the post-monolingualism (Yasemin Yildiz) and others, the novels are investigated in relation to the translation of the foreign experience within the migration and adolescence into new experiences.
This translation is examined for the application of the equivalence and adequacy principles.
