Eva Novotná's contribution Digitisation of old maps, atlases and globes in the Map Collection of the Faculty of Science, Charles University has brought the preparation, progress and result of the massive digitisation process closer. A data processing model in both internal and external system was introduce.
The author also dealt with the processing of bibliographic and technical standardised metadata (MARC xml, METS, MIX). Their importance for the subsequent selection of documents was emphasized.
Georeferenced points were created both during the cataloguing and by the method of interactive crowdsourcing with users after the publication of digitized works in Staremapy.cz portal. Digitization took place at an external company.
Examples of good practise for preparation (restoration) and transmission (documentation) of rare prints to external companies were mentioned. The lecture also touched on 3D digitization and on making the samples of globes and models available.
The data archiving took place first on a separate server, currently the data are stored in the CESNET storage in tiff format. 68, 000 map and atlas sheets have been described, digitized and made available. The accessibility was carried out through the Digital University Repository and the Digital Map Collection.
The use of both portals is high. Web portals of major cartographers Karel Kuchař, Ludvík Mucha and Jaromír Janka have been also made available.
Data have been integrated into the portal of world map collections Oldmapsonline.org and also into EUROPEANA. Miroslav Čábelka's contribution Georeferencing old maps dealt with the possibility of making digitised old maps available using the results of TEMAP project, which in 2011-2015 dealt with the ways to process and make available insufficiently registred and presented map collections.
It is an online placement of old maps on current foundation maps, which is based on Georeferencer technology. Institutions can also thanks to it obtain (in addition to easy access) new metadata for their maps, while deepening their relationship with the users.
Tomas Bayer's contribution Analysis of the map projection and its use in georeferencing old maps was the introduction of a new method of georeferencing old maps using the inverse reprojection technique based on the automated analysis of the map projection. This technique is suitable for small-scale maps, such as maps of the world in planisphere/hemispheres, maps of continents or large territories.
Unlike transformation-based methods it preserves geometric attributes of the original map without additional deformations. This technique can be combined with non-residual transformations, especially in the boundary parts of the map sheet with the lack of identical points.
The inverse reprojection was implemented in SW detectproj that was presented in the workshop.
