Documentary : The Periphery of art and the Question of Autonomy of the Aesthetic

Abstract

In this paper I focus on the problem of defining the nature of documentary: on the one hand this kind of presentational works is tied with non-fictional reporting, on the other it is supposed to realize some additional value (documentary works are not just TV reports). I propose to define documentary as a genre on the periphery of art realizing aesthetic function/value.

I try to apply a contemporary interpretation of the traditional notion of aesthetic disinterestedness (Thomas Hilgers) to this problem and try to show that it is possible to reconcile aesthetic value with motivational ambitions of documentary works.
