Word problems are on of critical areas in teaching of mathematics (Vondrová and Žalská, 2013). It is a topic that is very unpopular with pupils as well as teachers.

At the same time, word problems are the area in teaching mathematics where we have the opportunity to show pupils that mathematics is a useful tool for solving common, everyday situations and problems. However, this will only happen under the condition the context of the word problems is based on the pupils' everyday life, their interests and situations they face in their lives.

Research in the field of word problems conducted in the Czech Republic on Czech textbooks (Moraová, 2018) shows that the roots of many textbooks of mathematics form come from the 1990s and the context of these problems (i.e. what problems and situations the protagonists of word problems solve) reflect the reality of life in the late 1980s rather than contemporary life. Also research among student teachers and in electronic materials (Moraová, 2014 and Moraová, 2017) shows that the tendency is to pose word problems in very conservative contexts.

The aim of the sequence of presentations will be to acquaint the participants with the results of the research of word problem contexts in mathematics textbooks and also to give them enough space to create their own word problems, paying attention to putting the word problems into new, pupil and everyday life contexts.
