Cartographic representation of contour lines derived from ALS data in flat areas

Abstract

The paper presents a new method for the contour lines simplification preserving the a-priori given vertical error. The proposed technique is based on the vertical buffer, within the simplified contour line lies.

Instead of finding intersections with the vertical buffer, the vertical error of the contour line is estimated. Our method is suitable for large data sets, provides cartographically "correct" contour lines and minimizes the manual interventions and corrections of their shape.
