Abstract
The article focuses on tradition, legislation and contemporary challenges of university archives in the Czech Republic. It summarises the situation of all 11 accredited university archives, their history, archival fonds and activities.
It also shows the situation of other universities, which have not established their own archives and preserve their documents in state archives. The last part of the text is devoted to the Institute of the History of Charles University and Archive of Charles University as an example, which is be described more precisely.
