The aim of the workshop was to map the issue of the transformation of settlements and settlement structure in the medieval period. In the we focused on the very conclusion and results of this transformation.

We were interested in ideal concept of a medieval agricultural settlement and how rigidly medieval man applied it. The ideal form of settlements should reflected the 'pure' form of the socio-economic structure and institutional framework of the peasantry, including the degree of communalism and the strength of social ties between the individual families.

We therefore understood the contribution as part of a general study of the relationship between social and physical space. The first part of the paper summarized the knowledge of the medieval and, additionally, early modern transformation of the peasantry.

The second part used the testimony of the written sources on the principles governing the foundation or transformation of the high medieval settlements. The third then demonstrated these principles using specific examples.
