Great Expectations? Czech Post-Revolutionary Way of Teaching Creative Writing from the Perspective of its Actors

Abstract

If a discipline is to think about its future, it should be able to look into its past. Although its roots are already quite strong, the historical development of teaching creative writing in the Czech area has not yet been described.

The Velvet Revolution was certainly a crucial moment for its foundation and development. However, we cannot say that the Czech context was an unwritten page before.

The term"creative writing" itself has an unclear definition in Czech and discipline still does not have a simple position across society. Creative writing has been developing in the US for over a hundred years.

It has an equally interesting history on the European continent. These approaches are followed up separately in the Czech Republic by individual schools and the approaches differ more or less from each other.

In the absence of relevant sources, research will have to be based on oral history. Due to the nature of the sources, it will be necessary to address their intentionality or memory issues.

The founders of the field put great hopes on its future, which even today, 30 years after the revolutionary twists, have not been fulfilled. Are these expectations still relevant? The research would like to answer this and other questions.
