Elisabeth of Görlitz was thegranddaughter of the emperor Charles IV and the Swedish king Albrecht I. For anextended period she was the only heir of the House of Luxembourg.
Her secondhusband was John III the Pitiless, the former elected Prince-Bishop of Liege,who was well-known for his efforts to acquire Holland and Zeeland. They werefighting together for their inheritance, however, they were also able tosupport artists in their court (e. g.
Jan van Eyck).
