HOLINESS AND MARTYRDOM: IGNACIO ELLACURIA AND THE INTERPRETATION OF HIS LIFE AND DEATH BY JON SOBRINO

Abstract

This article explores holiness in relation to martyrdom, in particular that of the Jesuit theologian Ignacio Ellacuria (1930-1989). It introduces the life and work of Ellacuria and interprets his martyrdom drawing mainly on the writings of Jon Sobrino.

Sobrino's ideas of political holiness and Jesuanic martyrdom are examined. Moreover, the article pays attention to historical parallels between struggles for freedom and liberation in El Salvador and Czechoslovakia.
