Based on Czech corpus data, the paper gives the characteritics of the use of proverbs in the Rudé právo, the official daily of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, between the years 1948 and 1989. The status of the proverbs and their official use is compared with the way Czech proverbs (and antiproverbs) were employed by the average man or woman in the street to mock the regime, as well as with the official status and use of proverbs in the totalitarian system characterized by Wolfgang Mieder's study Proverbs in Nazi Germany.
