Abstract

In 1908, Edith Durham travelled extensively through the isolated, seldom explored and (during the given period) often demonized territory of northern Albanian mountain tribes. At that time, this was one of the last areas in Europe where unwritten customary law was still in effect.

In this book, Durham shows the life of local people, their culture, society and their worldview in a highly readable and humorous form while utilizing her own personal experiences and extraordinary stories collected throughout her more than a year long stay among the mountaineers. The book is also an important ethnographic study which sheds more light on one of the least explored corners of Europe at that time.
