The author outlines the development of wicker craft and willow cultivation in the Mělník area, one of the regions where wicker culture had found favourable conditions. Based on surviving records, the author details the activities of wicker craftsmen and women in this region beginning in the early 19th century, but points out that the establishment of willow plantations can be dated as far back as the Middle Ages.
The author theorises that the region may have fi rst served as a source of raw material and that wicker workshops emerged only later. This is an area warranting further research.
