Patients with diabetes mellitus have a higher rate of medical examinations and surgical procedures in comparison with non-diabetic population. There is strong evidence that poor perioperative glucose control is associated with higher morbidity and mortality.
This article introduces methods for preoperative evaluation of diabetic patients, preparation for examination or surgery and further management of diabetes during and after surgery. This text is based on current American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommendations, other listed sources and is intended as areview article.
