Early sex determination in pitcher plants (Nepenthes) by molecular marker

Publication

Abstract

This certified method enables early sex determination in Nepenthes plants. Nepenthes is a carnivorous plant genus covering 170 botanical species, many of which can be hybridized to produce attractive ornamental plants.

Since the plants reach the reproductive stage after 5 or many more years, it is important to know the sexes of individual plants as early as possible for the breeders. The method for sex determination is based on the findings of Scharmann et al. (2017).

It is independent of using commercial DNA extraction kits compared to the original protocol. The method reduces the required amount of plant tissue for sampling to only 10-15 mg.

It is also optimized for hybrid genotypes testing. Use of the method is universal for greenhouse-grown specimens as well as in-vitro grown plantlets.
