Medieval Art in Silesia : A Battlefield of National Historiographies

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The article deals with the instrumentalization of the history of medieval art in the context of nationalistic concepts during a significant part of the 20th century. It observes how German, Polish and Czech art histories gradually or simultaneously appropriate medieval art in Silesia - legitimizing thus their symbolic or real demands on this territory.

Interpretative shifts are illustrated with a case study on panel painting of St. Anne from Strzegom.
