Abstract

The essay follows relatioship of the illumination in Bohemia ( before 1420, 1420-1434/36 until cca 1450) and in Central and Western Europe also with comparisons to Italy, paying attention to regional differences of relevance of illumination and other sorts of art too. The text summarizes contribution of individual generations of painters from lands of the Bohemian Crown on the developement of illumination abroad (including artists exiled from Bohemia during the Hussites wars).

The problem of limits of possible confessional expression in the art of first half of the 15th century is also discussed.
