In between city and village: The development of spatial patterns of Czech suburbanisation 1997-2016

Abstract

The main objective of this article is to provide a coherent methodology for the delimitation of suburban municipalities in Czechia as an alternative to traditionally-used size categories of municipalities, then to describe and explain the scope and spatial distribution of residential suburbanisation. Development is compared during two distinct periods: 1997-2008 and 2009-2016, divided by the onset of the economic crisis.

While suburbanisation during the first period was typified by hierarchical and neighbourhood diffusion and extensive spatial growth of suburban areas around a large number of core cities, the second period has brought more selective and concentred suburban housing construction and migration
