Abstract

The Czech Republic is a country where skiing is at the top of the ladder in popularity among all locally practiced sports, one could say that alongside hockey and football it is a national sport. As for recreational skiing, skiing is probably the most massive sport where the data of the Czech Ski Association speaks about 20% of the skiing population, which is 2,000,000 skiers.

All this is due to the interplay of several factors, among which it is possible to highlight the geomorphological character of the territory, its geographical location and the associated suitable climatic conditions. Another factor is the tradition of skiing, whose origins in the Czech Republic date back to the 19th century, supported by the existence of the oldest ski association in the world (1903) and, in particular, by the exceptional development of skiing teaching.

Adding to the massive development and tradition of skiing also the generally characteristic feature of this sport, which is a higher risk, bringing more injuries, then we create a cocktail, which necessarily raises questions of solving the safety of such widespread sport. Ski safety is at the center of this paper, which also aims to acquaint the reader with the current situation in the field of skiing safety and relevant legislation in the Czech Republic.

The paper presents an extract of the general legislation and relevant case law in a form understandable to the lay ski community.Accent is put on the importance of FIS rules with the meaning of the supporting code of conduct of skiers long recognized in the international context and judicial authorities.
