Prevention of infectious complications after splenectomy

Publication |
2019

Abstract

Splenectomy is a routine surgical procedure performed mainly for traumatic injury. Splenectomy is also a powerful therapeutic procedure in a wide variety of medical disorders where the benefits of splenectomy outweigh the risks of the surgery.

Cellular and humoral immunity are both impaired after the spleen removal. There is an increased lifetime risk of serious infectious complications caused by encapsulated bacteria as a result of splenectomy.Preventive recommendationsin asplenic patients include consistent patient education, prophylactic vaccination and primary preventive antibiotic therapy.

These recommendations reduce the risk of potentially fatal overwhelming post splenectomy infection (OPSI) and reduce the risk of death from this infectious complication. It aims to improve adherence to the implementation of recommended prophylactic measures by improving awareness among physicians of different specializations.
