The 20th century meant the national and political emancipation of the Czech and Slovak nations. It occurred against the backdrop of significant European changes through the creation of the common state.

This union helped both nations to survive politically and finally reach their independence. In spite of the fact that both nations are connected by culture and are linguistically close, it was during the 20th century when the reasons for their political independence crystallized.

Even though the relationship of Czechs and Slovaks is complex, it represents specific example of international coexistence at the most basic level, which can be inspiring even at the European level.
