Abstract

A rise of the so-called Eurosceptical, populist parties and movements has led to a certain crisis of identity in European consciousness. A new vision of Europe is emerging while the liberal order represented by the EU is under strong internal attack.

We are witnessing an important and crucial struggle over European values. This paper aims to present the role of religion in these European culture wars and to discuss how it is being reinterpreted in the secular space of Central Europe, especially in the particular Czech context.

Although the Czech culture war can be perceived as a case of eastern conser-vative ethno-nationalistic resistance toward the EU, it fits the post-secular western pattern more.
