Reactionary and progressive rhetoric in postcommunist transformations

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |
2019

Abstract

The presentation explored some properties of the discourse of post-communist transformation using the ideal types of reactionary and progressive rhetoric described by Albert O. Hirschman.

Examples of each rhetorical figure were presented. The central argument made was that progressive and reactionary rhetoric appear simultaneously in their original and inverted form in postcommunism making the application of Hirschman's typology particularly challenging in the context of postcommunist studies.
