SOURCES OF INTERPRETATION OF EX 20.4 IN THE WORK OF ZDENĚK TRTÍK AND IN CATECHISM CČS(H)

Publication at Hussite Theological Faculty |
2019

Abstract

According Zdeněk Trtík, the central motive of the Second Commandment (more precisely Ex 20.4) is the prohibition of depicting God. This paper describes the theological starting points that formed Trtík's reading, and searches for the sources he possibly built on.

It also briefly introduces other interpretations of the Second Commandment in the Czechoslovak Hussite Church after Zdeněk Trtík, in which the motive of the prohibition of depicting God is supported by their use of the Czech Ecumenical Translation. The paper outlines some of the problems of such an approach and contributes to the clarification of the difference amongst those translations that understand Ex 20.4 as the prohibition of creating idols, and those that understand it as the prohibition of depicting God.
