Collaboration with patient with chronic pain in rehabilitation, clinical experience and case report

Abstract

Patients with chronic pain form a very substantial part of clients in rehabilitation out-patient clinics and cooperation with them is often complicated. Efficient co-operation implies the activity of all partners - patients, physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, occupational therapists.

Last but not least, it is important to look at patient's own difficulties and the ability to understand their own body. Patients should not only improve their physical skills (postural stabilization, breathing pattern, muscle strength, range of motion ...), somatognosis including the perception of changes in the specific parts of the body.

At the same time, they should learn how to perform personalised exercises alone as part of the so-called individual exercise unit and acquire skills that we could call "self management skills" - the exercise mentioned above, relaxation, setting priorities, planning and pacing, prevention of overdoing, self-patience, self-initiative, pain acceptance, diary, plan B. The points mentioned above are demonstrated on case report of patient from the out-patient clinic of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine The First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and General Teaching Hospital.
