Explanation of estrogenic activity in waste water treatment plant effluents

Publication

Abstract

There are many concerns about the effects of endocrine disruptors (EDs) on the environment and human health. Especially aquatic ecosystems are highly affected by waste water treatment plant (WWTP) effluents as a secondary source of pollution.

Hormonal activity of a sample can be revealed by using two approaches: analytical methods combined with prediction modelling and ecotoxicological assays. Discrepancies between results obtained from both approaches are plenteously described in the literature.

By comparing our results for more than 20 samples of WWTP effluents we tried to explain these differences.
