Jan Hus and the Krakovec Castle : On the historicity of his stay and the beginnings of local Hus tradition

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The paper focuses on Jan Hus' stay at the Krakovec Castle in Central Bohemia in 1414 and its reflection in the pre-White Mountain historiography. The author responds to works by Rakovník archivist Jan Krško who has questioned the historicity of Hus' stay at the castle.

The author strove to correct significant mistakes and wrong interpretation that are to be found in Krško's texts and that directly influence his conclusions. The paper proves the credibility of the key message that originated from the F text of the Old Bohemian Chronicles and the reasonability of Hus' stay.

The author also demonstrated that references to Master Jan's stay at Krakovec were more frequent in the pre-White Mountain historiography than information about his other stays outside Prague and that valuable traces of local tradition can be identified in works from the 1st half of the 16th century.
