In this first comprehensive study of the history of Czech Hegelianism the authors explore the reception of Hegel's philosophy since the time of the author's death. 19th century reception is represented by the most prominent Hegelians Bratranek and Smetana, next the lack of reception in the inter-war period is being analysed. The study focuses on the post-war reception, starting with the early interest in Hegel by the new communist ideology, next on the existential-anthropological generation of the 1960s with detailed reviews of Sobotka's and Kosik's work.

The study pays attention to the official marxist interpretation of Hegel in the normalisation period of 1970-1980s. The study concludes with a short discussion of the contemporary situation.
