Abstract
The aim of the study is to provide an original answer to the question of what Descartes means by the expression "innate idea" and of what he takes the extent of such ideas to be. A correlative goal is to explain and, where possible, to eliminate the tensions, or even contradictions, which seem to be generated by Descartes' (at first sight) less than compatible claims on the given questions in different texts.
