On the periphery of the Standard Czech lexicon

Abstract

At the present time when the dominance of the Prague functional structural theoretical frame is fading out in Czech linguistics and a plurality of linguistic approaches exists, yet structural methods are still being used, among other fields, in Czech lexicography. The author considers the need for a future Czech language codification.

Inspired by a paper of I. Němec about words at the lexical periphery, he makes a corpus research on adverbial compounds.

Observing their spelling, he does not refer only to the orthography, but also to the grade of their stability and lexicalization, regarding their position in phrasemes etc. The analyses seem to confirm growing respect for the codification as far as development of spellcheckers is concerned.

At the very end of the article, some suggestions for further improvement of the Czech language codification are added.
