Abstract

The goal of plan of André Tardieu, French Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, from March 1932 was to prevent Germany from a political and economic take-over of Central Europe. Tardieu suggested to create economic unit consisted of Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia that would be financially supported by European super power countries (Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany) via Bank for International Settlement.

After a diplomatic struggle, the plan was denied by all parties, including Czechoslovakia, as they didn't want to undertake high risk guarantees for loans that Great Britain and France provided to Austria and Hungary. However, economies of both countries were disrupted by economic crisis and both states announced insolvency.
