Medical Terminology: Specialized Language Education for Medical Schools

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2019

Abstract

This article deals with the teaching of specialized terminology at Czech Medical faculties, its status, and its role in the curriculum of General Medicine. The author of this text agrees with the inclusion of medical terminology as a 'language for special purposes,' which requires a less rigorous form of grammar and suitably adopted teaching method.

Nonetheless, the author does not want to abandon the development of capabilities that are traditionally associated with learning classical languages. The teaching of Greek/Latin, as it relates to specialized medical terminology, can be easily classified as a humanitarian subject, which has a place at Medical faculties as part of the Medical Humanities.
