Abstract

The postpositive use of single adjetictives is described as subject to severe restrictions, (the use of the superlative (the best result possible) or the temporal semantics of the head noun. This paper addresses the issue of the extent and the nature of positional variation in selected single adjectives (i.e. adjectives with no following dependent) which are found in both pre- and post-head positions without a lexicalized difference in meaning (available evidence x evidence available, cf. also imaginable, adjacent, obtainable, possible) and where the postpositive use cannot be explained by syntactic restrictions.

It provides a quantitative overview and classification of the adjectives found in this position.
