Abstract
The drawing by Mikoláš Aleš representing "Josef Mánes in Search of a Maecenas" ranks among the most important visual critiques created in nineteenth-century Bohemia. Using the image of the Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope, this satirical composition, created in 1880, elaborates on the interpretation of the marginal position of artists in Czech culture at the end of the nineteenth century.
