Abstract

The article assesses the state of and changes in the river landscape of the lower stretches of the Dyje/Thaya and Morava/Moravia rivers (south Moravia, the Czech Republic, Central Europe) during 30 years since finishing the project entitled Water Management Development in South Moravia. In the course of the project which substantially changed hydrological conditions in the respective landscape, the Dyje/Thaya and Morava/Moravia rivers stretches were canalized and surrounded by water prevention dams.

On the Dyje/Thaya River three water reservoirs were built covering 3,050 hectares in total: thus, after-flood conditions were eliminated. Native fish fauna has been mostly negatively influenced as evidenced by changes in its quantitative and qualitative parameters.

In the article, the most important measures aiming at redressing the above negative impacts of the former water management measures are presented. Data on fish communities/assemblages in various water habitats are elaborated in detail including changes in time and the current state.

For improving and enhancing the water regime in the study area towards restoring native fish fauna and keeping it healthy, measures to be taken are proposed. Moreover, the efforts have been complicated and reduced by a drought in 2015 - 2019.
