School Leadership as a Teacher Satisfaction Factor

Abstract

Teaching is a profession which is very demanding in terms of stress. This brings a greater degree of risk to the feelings of professional dissatisfaction.

The paper focuses on how teachers' job satisfaction can be infl uenced by school management. We present the results from 12 case studies of elementary school, with a total of 68 semi-structured interviews with the school management, selected teachers and representatives of school counselling centers.

We identifi ed three management styles by thematic analysis - directive, democratic and liberal. Each of this style has its advantages and risks.

The results suggest that the relationship to job satisfaction is indirect, mediated through the degree of safety that the school management can provide to its teachers. The topic of safety was manifested in our data through: (1) the comprehensibility of leadership; (2) the ability of the management to protect teacher against threats; and (3) the care of relationships in school.
