The Stereotype of the Horse and Proper Names. The Black Horse and The Little White Horse Pub

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

In both language and culture, the horse has shown to be one of the most influential animals to stand by Man's side. As a consequence, it is often referred to in proper names, especially in anthroponyms, toponyms and chrematonyms.

The aim of this paper is to explore whether - and if yes, then to what extent - proper names reflect stereotypes connected to the horse (such as its colour, etc.). It focuses primarily on selected specifics connected to names of hospitality establishments, and draws on methods of cognitive and cultural linguistics.
