Systemic cancer treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen |
2019

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma is a serious cancer that is difficult to treat by systemic treatment. Systemic cancer treatment finds application especially in advanced stages where treatment by surgical or locally ablative methods cannot be used.

The systemic treatment is currently based on the use of targeted agents represented by low molecular-weight multi-kinase inhibitors. Immunotherapy in the form of immune checkpoint inhibitors is being investigated with great hope.

The authors summarize present knowledge and future possibilities of systemic treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
