Gestational pemphigoid - pemphigoid gestationis

Abstract

Gestational pemphigoid is an autoimmune, blistering skin disease. Placental and foetal antigens are seen as alien by the mother's immune systém.

MHC II molecules interact with the mother's immune systém, causing a semi-allogenic immune reaction against BP180. This is a key structural protein of the hemidesmosomes, which provide adhesion between epidermis and dermis.

The disease heals spontaneously, but more serious outbreaks can be expected in subsequent pregnancies.
