Abstract

Review of Didier Decoin's novel Office for Gardens and Ponds. The novel takes place in Japan in the 12th century, in a world that enchants subtlety, sensuality and ephemerality.

The fate of man manifests in him in the landscape, and at critical moments he can always show "some sense of continuing as we should, even if we think he has disappeared."
