QUALITY OF LIFE AND CARE OF THE CHILD AT RISK: EXPERIENCE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Abstract

There is currently a quite lively debate happening in the Czech Republic concerning the quality and forms of substitute care for an endangered child. This discussion is undoubtedly related to the on-going transitional period in which the Czech society finds itself and in which there are certain long-term accepted values originating from the socialist period that are abandoned and replaced by new ones.

In some cases it is about selecting a foreign model, in others it is about respecting our own historical continuity or research outcomes; sometimes it is more a case of the implementation of pre-election promises without respect to the possible systemic consequences. These lively, sometimes even conflicting discussions surely have from a long-term perspective a positive influence on the critical revision of certain "customary" processes and also strengthen attention to the society that is dedicated to this topic.

However, these discussions also lead to many lengthy arguments even among significant personas who deal with this problematic on the long term, and likewise contribute to a certain chaos in this area.
