What isn't visible in Romani language curricula at first sight : Functions of Romani in the life of Romani pupils and in education

Abstract

In the article the concepts of language and communitation are contextualized and the author pays attention to various functions of Romani language as a mother tongue. He warns about regarding language just as a means of reference function.

He shows the language situation of the Romani children in Slovakia with Romani as mother tongue and stresses the importance of Romani as a communicative language in education. He shows the detailed research of language competence and language socialization of the Romani children.

The author comes to conclusion that the teacher's knowledge of Romani can help both the teacher and the pupils to communitate, and it can even facilitate teaching and learning Slovak.
