Abstract

The character of brother Elias of Cortona is one of the most discussed issues of the early Franciscan history. A close companion of St.

Francis, whom the Saint entrusted with the leadership of the brothers, later became one of the most denounced figures of the Franciscan tradition. The article presents an attempt to outline his biographical profile, describes his involvement in the offices of the Order and his engagement in the service of emperor Frederick II.
