Abstrakt
Creating a Latin-OE parallel corpus for contrastive analysis: The primary aim of this research project is to gain an understanding of the interlanguage exchange between Latin and Old English, for which we have chosen the method of contrastive analysis between the two languages. For this purpose, the first necessary step was to create a morphologically and syntactically annotated parallel corpus and find a suitable user interface which would offer a viable starting point for any contrastive analyses which might follow.
The text of St John's gospel from the West Saxon Gospels was chosen for the project's pilot run. The aim of the parallel corpus was to incorporate all of the various readings as recorded in Liuzza's (1994) critical edition, which consolidates eight Old English manuscripts containing a translation of John's gospel from the Latin Vulgate.
The aligned parallel corpus can be viewed and searched using the AntPConc software which, however, does not lend itself to the multiple readings feature. In the next step, this parallel corpus is due to become integrated into Intercorp, which runs under the Kontext interface of the Institute for the Czech National Corpus and is able to accommodate multiple readings.
A minor component of this project is a study which demonstrates the corpus' functionality using the Latin sanctus, Old English halig and their respective translation equivalents. It is instrumental in analyzing the lexical field of holiness and supplementing Fúsik's (2018) detailed semantic analysis of halig , which did not explain the relation between sanctus and halig, although it may be assumed that halig is more frequent than other adjectives in the lexical field ( gebleotsod , gehalgod , gesælig ) primarily due to its being a preferred translation of sanctus .
