Abstract

The first part of the book introduces John Donne's authorial personality and style to Czech readers, examining the reasons for Donne's popularity among modern poets and critics. It analyzes his typical imagery and the tendency of his poetry to combine dramatic immediacy and emotion with ingenious conceptual play.

Detailed comparative analyses of the Czech translations of Donne's secular and devotional lyrics highlight the basic challenges involved in translating Donne's style, describe the different approaches adopted by Donne's six Czech translators and evaluate the translation projects of Hana Žantovská and Zdeněk Hron who have translated the most extensive selections of Donne's poetry.
