Abstract
The Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), a bird species associated with naturally meandering streams with clean water and plenty of fish food, can be found in Prague on the Vltava River and on many streams. The species also nests on some streams, but it has to deal with numerous problems and disturbances associated with the urban landscape.
Revitalization and various modifications to river banks often result in the loss of nesting sites. Moreover, the removal of vegetation during the maintenance of streams is not favourable for the king-fisher, as it loses its low perches above the water needed for fishing and natural shelter.
Despite all these difficulties, they can breed chicks successfully, sometimes four times during one breeding season.
